How do I measure the neck circumference of my dog?

Either you measure directly on the neck with 2 fingers under the measuring tape, or should you already have a collar with click buckle, you take the length and measure it but only including one part of the click buckle, I would also need to know how thick the collar is. But as I mentioned already, a phone call saves a lot of questions and emails! :)
